Say hello to HDMI

[Oslo, August 25, 2003] When Sony just this week announced 2 new video projectors for home theater use they were both going to support HDMI. HDMI or High Definition Multimedia Interface is a big initiative with support from giants like Hitachi, Matsushita (Panasonic), Philips, Sony, Thomson (RCA), Toshiba and Silicon Image. The spesifications were fixed by the end of last year and at CES last winter JVC, Meridian, Panasonic and Samsung had prototypes supporting HDMI. It's anyhow only now that we are starting to hear about actual products. At IFA this week one can expect to see many new products supporting HDMI.

It has allready been possible to use DVI to get the digital signal from a DVD to a digital display, but DVI has only been available to High End home theater. HDMI is smaller and less expensive than DVI, it has higher bandwith, it can also carry a digital audio signal and it has a wide support among manufacturers of consumer electronics. Suddenly the hottest DVD-players with progressive scan are not looking that sexy any more...
